Dr. Shami Receives Top Doctor Distinction for the Second Year in a Row

Dr. Joseph Shami has been named Top Doctor by NJ Top Docs for the second consecutive year as of October 1, 2017. The award—which takes into account experience, training, membership in professional associations and board certifications—is reserved for New Jersey’s top doctors in their field of expertise.  Dr. Shami will also have a spot reserved in the next edition of Healthy Living magazine.

In addition to his position at Gastroenterology Associates of New Jersey (GANJ), Dr. Shami is a trustee at IPA of North Jersey at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center as well as Director of the Esophageal Motility Lab. He is also a clinical assistant professor at the School of Health and Medical Sciences at Seton Hall University.

During some of his time with GANJ, Dr. Shami was also Emeritus Chief for the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, totaling 14 years overall in the position.

Dr. Shami completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and residency in internal medicine at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. He also received his medical degree from the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, Italy and a Bachelor of Science in biology from St. Peter’s University.

Dr. Shami holds several memberships including:

  • American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

  • Medical Society of New Jersey

Dr. Shami is also multilingual, with fluency in English and Italian and the ability to speak fully in Spanish and Arabic.
