What Is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?
A Specialized IBD Care Team
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The two primary types of IBD are:
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
IBD is most often diagnosed in young adults but can affect patients of any age. Risk factors may include family history and ethnic background.
IBD is frequently confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). While symptoms may overlap, IBD causes intestinal inflammation, whereas IBS does not — and the treatments are very different. (See video below for more information.)
GANJ’s new Advanced Center for IBD Care provides advanced, personalized care for patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Our specialized team combines focused IBD expertise with the latest diagnostic technology to help patients achieve remission, prevent complications, and improve quality of life.

Our Goals: Remission, Prevention, Quality of Life
IBD is not curable, but it is highly treatable. Our goals include:
- Achieving and maintaining remission
- Preventing long-term complications
- Improving daily quality of life
- Providing proactive, ongoing disease monitoring
“IBD is a chronic condition, but it does not have to control a patient’s life,” said Elliot Coburn, MD, gastroenterologist at GANJ and clinical lead of the Care Center. “With modern therapies, close monitoring, and regular follow-up, we can stay ahead of the disease.”
