What is Hemorrhoidal Banding?
Hemorrhoidal banding, also known as rubber band ligation or hemorrhoid ligation, is a procedure conducted to decrease the size of internal hemorrhoids. It is the most widely used nonsurgical option for treating this condition.
Internal hemorrhoids may cause bleeding, itching and pain. When a rubber band is placed around the internal hemorrhoids, the tissue decreases in size. Rectal bleeding and prolapse commonly associated with internal hemorrhoids are also decreased.

The Procedure
After being sedated, an endoscope inserted into the rectum creates a gentle suction that pulls the appropriate tissue into it. The rubber band can then be placed around the base of the hemorrhoid to reduce its size. Because there are no nerve endings within the rectum, this procedure is pain-free and only takes approximately ten minutes.
