What is the Bravo pH monitor?

The Bravo pH monitor is a capsule-based, catheter-free alternative diagnostic procedure that measures pH to effectively diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux disease.

GERD occurs when the muscle at the end of your esophagus doesn’t fully close or it opens too frequently, causing stomach acid to travel into the esophagus.

A GERD diagnosis can be confirmed with the Bravo pH monitoring system by evaluating symptoms such as:

Bloating
Heartburn
Hoarseness or chronic sore throat
Nausea or upset stomach after eating (indigestion)
Regurgitation of acid into the mouth or back of the throat

What to expect during the Bravo pH monitor procedure

1
Swallow a vitamin-sized capsule
During the procedure, the physician attaches a small capsule to the wall of the esophagus. The capsule transmits pH information to a tiny receiver worn by the patient for 48 hours.
2
Data is recorded
When the 48 hours are over, the data are uploaded and analyzed. The capsule is left to pass through the digestive tract naturally and is excreted.
